I just recently set up a 220 reef ready. It has been set up and running for a few months now. I bought a bubbleking supermarin 200 for this tank. On my old tank I was using a lifereef skimmer. I thought my lifereef skimmer performed amazingly well and pulled all sorts of nasty skimmate. I was mistaken. While my lifereef performed well this new skimmer produces even more skimmate , darker and more stinky. I have to empty it almost everyday. I skim pretty dry and if I skim wetter I would probably overflow my cup. My lifereef drew its air in from the skimmer cup while this one draws in outside air and the lid has vent holes on top from which the murky air emits from. I do have a reef octopus skimmate collector but it won't fit under my stand and I didn't want it to sit beside my stand for my guests to see a poop collector next to it plus my wife wouldn't stand for that either. Here is a couple of pics of skimmate after a day and how much foam. Any suggestions? Thanks .

I would suggest making a pretty box for your skimmate collector and set it outside your stand.
Then to keep the smell under control, put a chunk of a toilet bowl tablet in it. It kills all the bacteria and smells nice. It worked great for me!

I believe your Bio-Pellets have a lot to do with the amount your are pulling. Did you run Pellets with the LifeReef and if so was it located the same way? When I ran Pellets my Skimmer also would produce large amounts. It would fill the Reef Octopus large Waste Collector to shut off in less the a week. The smell also when pellets are run is quite awful, it like amplifies the aroma. TG for the Carbon cup on top!

As skim said above, likely the result of carbon dosing of some sort. Bio pellets, vinegar, vodka, NoPox, all will cause a serious increase in the volume and nastiness of skimmate.

Of course, you didn't say if you were dosing carbon... If not, well, just a good skimmer :)

My Vertex produces the same sort of nastiness, including baseball sized lumps of foam above each of the four air vents in the top of the skimmate cup cover. I know of no way to reduce this... and honestly, doing so just leaves this crap in the tank, where you really don't want it, right? My solution, dump and rinse collection cup daily.

While starting this system, I used the Red Sea 'Reef Mature' system. 1st time I've ever done so... and yeah, the muck is pretty bad. Now that the bio filter is established, I'm backing off the NoPox over a number of days, to zero... and then I'll start dosing Triton Core7, which was my goal all along, but you can't really start Triton until the system is up and running. Hopefully, without the NoPox, the smelly stuff will decrease.

That's a great idea.Don't know if I have enough space on either side for a small cabinet on the wall that I have it on.

I am not dosing any carbon just running bio pellets like i was prior.

Just curious if you are still happy with the bubble king skimmer. Any benefits over the lifereef or vice-versa? Looking to upgrade my skimmer for a new build.

Skimmer is still a beast and would highly recommend it. I just recently removed the bio pellet reactor and it doesn’t produce as stinky and dark skimmate as it once did but it may have been pulling too much nutrients out of tank because my corals are starting to have better polyp extensions .

Here you go. This is what I use.

The carbon in the top removes any smell.

I have an old storage container like this without the electronics if you are interested. I actually didn't use my auto shut kit that came with this either if you are interested in it as well, I already had a Reef Octopus 22 Elite skimmer, so I just hooked the float switch to my octopus pump portal.
