Are there many out there that use a skimmate waste collection cup with a carbon filter? Does it keep the stench out? I'm getting pressured to figure something out or I may get thrown out on the street.....and I don't want that to happen.

I use one. It eliminates the smell. Only time you can smell anything is when you unplug it to drain it.

Interesting, are you carbon dosing or something? I have a huge skimmer on my system and it only smells when i actually empty it.

Nope, it just stinks extremely bad once the cup is 1/3 full. We can smell it from the basement to the second story like it's sitting right in front of us. It's pretty bad, looks like I'll have to give one of these waste containers a go.

Got the reef octopus one and I love it. Auto shut off when full and carbon cup works for stench..

I also have never heard of this....I don't smell anything until I go to empty it? Now, because of this thread, I will notice it for sure lol........thanks a lot :(

Thanks for the pic, looks like i'm going to be leaning this way. I wonder if the avast or the octo would be the better choice as they have different overflow sensors.

Glad I could help : )

My skimmate is horrible smelling and use an Avast Davy Jones locker with a carbon filtered vent on top. Works well for the smell.

I get about 6-8 cups of dry sticky skim mate per day. The Davy Jones locker came with a pressure switch that I chose to get the one for Apex BoB hook up. I also installed another float switch in the bucket up top slightly lower then where the pressure switch would get activated and also hooked up to my Apex.

The first switch if opened will send me an alert that the bucket needs dumped. It has a delay timer that will shutdown my skimmer after about 10 minutes if I don't get it dumped. Then the top pressure switch if hit will send me another alert and shutdown my skimmer instantly. When I have an apex controllable pump running which I had going for a while with the waveline dc 12000 I had the first switch send me an alert and told the pump to slow down by 15%.

Then in the 5g bucket I put a mj1200 with a hose that goes up and over into another room down into a floor drain. So, I will periodically dump it a few times a week that way and usually get to it before I get the "Please Dump me I'm about full alert". I only need to run the mj1200 for a couple seconds and a siphon is started. If I'm remote I have a webcam I can get to that I can check to make sure everything looks good and dump it.

I have a newer 75g sump now but below is what is still mainly setup with that sum now too. Can see the black vinyl tubing going up from the bucket and barely see the side horizontal float switch up top on the left side of the bucket. Carbon filter on top.

It stinks up my entire house. Thanks for the feedback

Same issue so I bought a RO waste collector and it helps some...
You still have the holes on the collection cup of the skimmer that leak some smell, i thought of plugging them but it might put a negative pressure on the skimmer. What helps too is a neck cleaner.. Keeps the smell out of the skimmer, the more you remove from the skimmer the better.

Man you walked by the tank and it stunk. Good skimmers will do that.

Thanks Jason, thats pretty sophisticated! I don't have a drain or I would think of adding something like you mention. I just would be curious which would be more reliable, octo or avast but it seems both are pretty solid. I think my main concern would be just to have my skimmer shut down if it gets full.

Thanks Shred, sounds like the exact same situation I had. The worst part is the staircase leading from the basement to main floor, as it gets trapped in there! And agreed, if you plugged the vent holes it would cause issue's with the performance, or vibrate your collection cup alot.
