Hi, quick, possibly stupid question -- I'm starting a 55 FOWLR and I recently purchased a medium Aquaripure Nitrate Filter. Given that, do I still need a skimmer? Thanks!

It would sure help keep water cleaner.

A skimmer is a must in this hobby for anything over a 20gallon, you might get away with a 29gallon but even with that I'd use a skimmer! Never mind id use a skimmer on a 3gallon just to take the poop out instead of my fish and coral live with it till I did a water change!

This really just isn't true.

I ran my 55 for 3 years with no skimmer and never had issues.

Are they helpful? Yes of course but it is not needed.

It re ally depends on how you stock your tank. If you keep a light bioload on the tank you will be fine without a skimmer. You will also want a good clean up crew if you don't get a skimmer.

Look into making an algae scrubber as well. They work wonders on keeping algae out of the display.

Cool! That's sorta what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the input!
