I have been doing my research but I am still unsure of good quality products/brands.
I currently have a 55g tank but that will be upgraded sooner rather than later. The sump is an Aqueon ProFlex Sump model 4 so it has plenty of room for a skimmer to sit in or outside. Sounds like I should also make sure this is sealed really well as per reviews.

I assume the overflow needs to match the return pump or something will get too much or too little water. A control valve on the overflow drain would also work, correct?

If anyone could point me to some reputable reviews on skimmers and/or overflows please. That would be a big help. I am not opposed to buying new or used on parts. Is there any downside to buying used skimmers?

The water is currently sitting within the correct levels and staying consistent day to day. I would think getting everything running now should only make it easier in the long run.

Last thing as a side question: Can you get kits that consist of the water additives as a group instead of all individually?

Don't let it be related to reviews.

You should check every tank you use for leaks.

Gear too where it uses plumbing outside the tank.

Definitely get at least one good book to follow.

As well, please read the @revhtree's supreme guide to starting a reef.

Good pumps will have a flow curve graph on the box that shows you the relationship of pumping height to flow rate.

Use that to select your pump based on how tall the tank is and how much flow you want.

Two times to four times your display volume is the usual range.
