How long is this usually? I purchased a Eshopps PSK-75H and installed today and within the hour I had dark nasty skimmate in my collection cup... so is the general rule of 1-2 weeks no longer implied?

It just depends, each skimmer can be different, and if it's and new setup the break in period will be longer.

A vinegar bath to strip away grease from production, can help.

I've only owned (2) skimmers, but they both starting pulling out nice skimmate the day I installed them. I gave both a nice hot water then RO/DI rinse before hand. Not sure if I believe in the 'break in period' perhaps for new tanks that do not have organics to pull out yet.
