Hey guys,

Does a USED skimmer have to break in again on a new tank?

I use a Bubble Magus Curve 5 on my 55g that's been running for about 2 years almost. Water level for skimmer is 9".

I took the skimmer out and put it in my new 42g. Literally just drained the water from it, and moved it, hooked it up and turned it on. The water level is the same as before, 9", however, it's skimming very wet, and I cannot get the foam to dial down.

So, does it need to break in again? If water quality changes, does it need to break in again? It's been running for over 24 hours now and it still won't stop overflowing. I've also tried raising the skimmer but it still slowly over flows.

I've inspected the skimmer several times, and nothing is out of place or anything. It's mind boggling.

When I switched from a 75 to 150 my skimz skimmer didn’t re-break in. I think sometimes skimmers can just be finicky, I would think it would fix itself within a few days. I would take the cup off and just let it run over if possible.

Yea I took the cup off and it's just been running with the air intake open all the way. What's odd is that I lifted it up about 2.5" but the water still rises as fast and overflows. I'm hoping after a few days it'll settle down. I've read peoples posts about different tank water could be it and it just needs to adjust...? Which kind of makes sense although I do not understand the science behind it lol

I think it’s possible, did you add more rock?

The 55g had about 65lbs of rock, and the 42g has about 40ish.. So the tank it went in has less rock. And the 42g is only about 3 weeks old. It's been cycled through and I only have 2 small fish in there now with some softies.

That baffles me, hopefully it will straighten out in a few days!
