I’ve been running a boyu wg 428
skimmer in the back compartment of my all in one tank for a couple of weeks now. I can’t work out how to take the inner cup out of there is one so I have just been removing the lid to wipe off any gunk.

However for the past couple of days the foam has been coming out of the holes in the lid. I’ve turned it down twice but there doesn’t seem to be any gunk now just loads of bubbles.

Am I doing something wrong?.

Turn air control down slightly or raise skimmer or lower water level where skimmer is at just a little

I agree with above. Your skimmate is too wet so doing the above maneuvers will help make it more dry. However at some point the skimmer collection cup needs to be removed and the skimmate emptied. Otherwise it will continue to overfill which is what is happening now.

I have found it more difficult to tune these small protein skimmers compared to the full size ones, just fyi.

The cup on top most certainly should be adjustable and removable. Did you try searching any videos or reading the manual to help with cleaning and disassembly? Not sure if it’s anything like mine on my AIO but I had to make something to set mine on top of in the back compartment or it did just what yours is doing. I also had to adjust my collection cup as well. However mine is an aquamax skimmer.

Looking at the pic, you just wiggle it out of the blue rubber/plastic ring. You got an exploded view of the parts in your instruction booklet?

Hold the body of the skimmer in one hand and wiggle the collection cup. Lower the water level or adjust air till the skimmate is more foam than water. It shouldn't fill up over night. Do you have the manual that came with the skimmer? Good luck.

The skimmer came as part of a bundle when I bought the tank second hand so no instructions. The whole thing just sits in the compartment at the back of the tank. I’m looking for a new skimmer at the moment but my tank is only 135 litres so I don’t need anything huge.

Tunze makes a great small flash skimmer. The skimmer you have looks fine. Maybe just experiment with it before giving up.

I think the water level is too high. Either raise the skimmer of lower the level. Once that’s done the amount it will pull will not be continuous as the skimmer when first started will go a bit wild till you find the sweet spot. Once it settles in you won’t get those bubbles. You don’t want to skim too dry as the bubbles take a long time to settle also too wet and the cup fills up fast. Be patient it takes a bit to get it just right.

I have an Eshopps nano that I love, but if I let the skimmate get over 1/2 filled it tends to bubble out the top like yours. It may be just a small skimmer thing. It just lets me know to empty my cup. I think once you figure out how to get your cup out, it shouldn’t be a problem.

It looks like the cup isn’t removable with this model. I’m looking at getting a Tunze 9001

The cups usually just pull off, a wiggle might be necessary to get it off but I don't know of any skimmers that don't let you empty your cup without doing so. If it has been running for a short time only it will settle down but need emptying regularly while it settles it does look a bit wet there, well a lot wet, and after 2 weeks it should have started making less skimmate, do you add any liquid foods to the aquarium?, it can makes them go nuts too, turn off for half hour to hour when feeding anything might help, and if you changed any filters then that can affect how they work too. My skimmer used to go mental when I changed the socks and I only had it in 5 inches of water when it was new since adding a roller fleece it's now moved and in 10 inches of water (the original suggested depth) and works great and its going on 7 years old now. Hope that might give you a better idea of what is going on with your skimmer. Lastly if it just won't play nice if you can add a valve for an air line to your intake via a bit more airline then you can micro control the air intake and make it less air in as suggested earlier and lifting it or lowering the water level it's in possibly putting something like a plastic tupperware box (with holes made in it) to move it up in its chamber will help too but may eventually become useless as the skimmer gets old, good luck hope it works out well for you. And one last thing again old skimmers (used) work better than shiny new ones hence my new c5 sitting in the incorrect amount of water for 4 plus years.

I have a 9001 on a mixed 30. It's done a great job so far. It's been running for almost 2 years. The magnet mount is my only complaint. I had a stronger magnet that fixed the mounting problem. You can't hear it run. :)

But according to the manufacturer for yours.
"Features

Detachable collection cup for easy cleaning
Low noise, high output"
Ahh it looks like the cup was too high so that’s why it wasn’t detaching properly. It’s very stiff but does come out. It didn’t really have much stuff in it but I cleaned it and put it back on.
