I have a slight oilish skin on my water surface, If I add a hob protein skimmer will it help and just be overall beneficial? Have a nano tank

Also noticed my cleaner shrimp keeps putting his anteni on my clowns, I know they clean paracites but is that how they do it? Like grab the fish? He's not trying to eat them cause they are slow moving fish is he lol?

He's about the same size maybe even bigger

I guess without a weir, you may accumulate surface debris which either floats or sits on the meniscus.
I doubt a HOB skimmer will get chance to remove it though, as it will take water in from below the surface.
Cleaner shrimps just want to clean your fish, nothing more to it than that.

Okay thanks, was just cause he was grabbing him lol but the fish where seem to like it and kept going back

You could try directing the return or powerhead more towards the surface to break the surface tension. This also helps with oxygenation of the water.

I don't have a strong enough pump. My wave maker is halfway down the tank in the middle for the corals but is slightly pointed up and the return nozzel from the filter is too. Planning on getting a red sea pump like one of they long ones

I have the Reef Octo HOB-2000. It pulls from the surface, not below. It’s intake goes from the water surface to only about an inch deep.

I have it hooked up to a smart plug so I can shut it off from my phone. Occasionally I forget to turn it back on, and I sometimes get that film you describe. Once flipped back on the water surface goes back to crystal clear in about 30-45 min.

So IMO, yes, the RIGHT HOB skimmer will solve your problem.

What kind of tank is it And what sort of filtration do you have?

A “surface” skimmer will help. Some protein skimmers have surface skimmers and some filters can be fitted with them, depending on what your setup is...

I have a 60cm cube with a canister filter, adding a refugeum very soon I was even designing a 10g sump that will sit at the side of my tank (I don't have a stand that has space under) so I'm figuring out how I could do a sump that sits beside my tank.

Filtration is decent does about 7x turnover on the tank but as I said I want to do a sump once I figure it out. What benefits do skimmers have? Is there any need for one in a low stock nano? I do have a dang army of a cuc

There are inexpensive surface skimmer attachments that you can add to the intake pipe of your canister filter. That will probably be your quickest and cheapest solution for the time being.

If you are going to eventually add a sump, that will require an overflow box which will serve the same purpose.

As far as additional benefits, skimmers work by employing micro bubbles to foam-fractionate and do so by drawing air, typically from the room. This helps oxygenate the water and assists with gas exchange. Because of this, they can play a role in pH regulation.

Plenty of people run systems without them, you don’t NEED one. I’m just trying to answer your last question about potential benefits.

Got ya, I found a good video on king of diy channel about a overflow without drilling so Im gonna do that

Mind sharing the video? I have the same issue, and my Eshopps PSK-100H HOB skimmer doesn't help at all.
