Skimmer for 40 breeder sps.

Thanks, I've only had it running for maybe 4 days so I can't say for sure what my results will be, but I have no reason to believe that it won't grow algae.
You have given me a good idea. I may end up doing something similar. Thanks a lot for this.

I ran a vertex omega 130 for a couple of years on a 40 breeder, always did a good job.

Yep, it grows algae.

Just now:

Cool idea I going to save the picture. I got a couple of those filters
You should add a thread on the diy forum on this. Very cool solution that I think would appeal to people!

I'll throw something up there. I didn't think it was even worthy of a diy thread, it's quite possibly the simplest piece of equipment that there is.

I have a 40 breeder with a 20-gallon high sump and have been running a SKIMZ SN143 MONZTER MINI PROTEIN SKIMMER from BRS for about 8 month and have been very happy. Its a new tank and I am just starting to add corals but the 2 dwarf lionfish i have create a huge mess and the skimmer keeps up with it great.

Erk, while I appreciate the feedback I'm not really interested in going that route. It's a total water volume of about 50 gallons and I have some space concerns in my sump as well. A counter current monster isn't a viable solution for me. Also warranty is important and I don't mind paying for new.

I have a Reef Octo Classic 90 HOB on my 40 gallon cube. I'd highly recommend it, easy to service, pretty quiet and it pulls great skim. It's also really easy to tune. I know its HOB but if there's space outside the side of your sump it might be a good option. Save you some space.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I should be receiving my somatic 60s tomorrow. I'll provide an update once it's installed and broken in.

I'd be interested to see your take on the Somatic. From personal experience I know how much PITA Bubble Magus was. Let me know what you think of the new skimmer.

So far it's awesome. Definitely larger than the other skimmers I've had. But I popped it in the tank, turned it on, set the water level and it was skimming within a couple of hours. It's a very high quality piece of equipment. For the same price as a bubble magus it's on another level.

Nice. I like the sound of that. What water level did you set this at?

I didn't adjust the skimmer platform at all so it's probably sitting in about 6 inches of water. It would probably be better in 7 but I was still able to adjust the outlet pipe so that the water level was maintained right around the base of the collection cup. Should provide for a nice dryish skim at that level.

I'll shoot some pics when I get home in a couple of hours.

Also, I have a bubble magus curve a5 for sale if anyone wants it. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend buying it from me. It's awful.
