hi

Im getting a red sea reefer 525xl and next thing i need is a skimmer.
Been looking at a Nyos 220 but im not realy sure as it is rather ekspensive.
Any one here using one? Is it silente? And so on

realy no one using this skimmer?

I've been really happy with my Deltec 1000i on the same tank with a heavy bio load and feeding. Has no problems keeping up.

I forgot to note that I was running the Nyos. But ended up getting rid of it since it has a tendency to cavitate on startup. This made feed modes difficult since you would either have to raise the skimmer or blow in the line to get air flow going again. You can search the forums and find others with the same issues.

realy need advise as im more or less done only need a good skimmer now

I'm very happy with the Deltec. Very easy to take apart and clean, and very quiet. I chose the DC version and use the pump to adjust whether I'm skimming wet or dry. Was very simple to get dialed in. They have a manual skimmer cup cleaner, drain tubing and overflow protection. I have 21 fish and feed 6-8 cubes a day and the skimmer has no problems keeping up. Adam @Battlecorals is a sponsor here and carries Deltec.

I'll second the Deltec. I have the 1000xi version that I purchased from Battlecorals. It's the A/C version of the one JDowns mentioned. It's pretty near silent, and I actually have to turn it off for several hours a day to prevent stripping too much nutrients from my tank. I'm not as heavily stocked and don't feed quite as much as JDowns, so YMMV. It's an excellent skimmer

I have a Reefer 525 XL and I put a Reef Octopus Regal 200 SSS on it. I wish I would have gone with the 150 SSS or EXT but other than being way oversized, I've been really happy with it. It's very quiet, pulls a lot of gunk out of the water, and has a good auto shut off for when the collection cup fills up. I did have to make my own stand out of egg crate though to bring it up to the recommended water depth in the Reefer sump.

Ok ill take a look at that skimmer. It is ratet for 500-1000 so its in the range im looking for. Realy just need it to be quiet as it will be near bedroom

One thing you should be aware of with the RSR 525XL is that it's overflow is probably going to be the noisiest thing in your system. Every time I think I have mine dialed in, something varies slightly in the return flow, and I'm back to slightly over or under adjusted on the overflow. To make matters worse, the overflow box is asymmetrical. The return comes out on one side of the overflow, and this causes issues if you use an alternating flow on your circulating pumps. I'm using Gyres in anti-sync mode on opposite sides of the tank. When the one on the right side of the tank is cranked in forward, a lot of water is pushed into the overflow box, the water level in the overflow rises, and I can easily end up dumping water into the emergency overflow pipe which can get loud. Once the flow switches and the Gyre on the left is cranked up, the return outflow pipe blocks some of the flow into the overflow box, the water level drops, and if I'm not careful will cause the main overflow to pull air (REALLY Loud). This may not be as big an issue with more traditional circulation pumps, but it definitely is with Gyres. Also, others have noted that the overflow on the RSR 525 is tricky at best (do a search on this site), so I don't think it's solely a Gyre issue. Just wanted you to be aware that this tank is pretty quite overall, but can become a bit noisier than expected if you want to have a lot of alternating flow in your system as I do for SPS.

Couldn't agree more with this assessment. I run pretty much the same gyre setup but with two MP40's creating a standing wave and two Neptune WAV pumps on 4% Rincon to create a bit of random flow in the tank. But the sloshing over the overflow and the random gurgling from the emergency overflow is the nosiest thing on the tank.

Been running a bubble magnus curve 7. Doesn't seem to be in the range you are looking for but cost effective and does a great job with a medium bio-load.

Ok thats news to me. Gonner run 2 mp40. Is it hard to dail in other than that?

If I was buying a skimmer today it would be a toss up between a Reef Octopus SSS or Regal (depending on if I decided on a DC pump or not) or a new Deltec.

I've been running the Gyres for most of the time I've had the tank, so I can't say for sure that in the absence of those it would be easier to dial in, but I do recall reading other threads here about struggling to dial in the overflow on this tank. It's very sensitive, and any slight variations in flow rate of your return pump could knock it out of the silent zone.
