So, need a little help with a skimmer. Recently setup my 39 gallon and have an Eshopps S-120 Cone Skimmer. The tank has been setup for about 2.5 weeks. The skimmer was running crazy for the first two weeks. Finally, I put it in a bucket and got it to "break-in." Put it back in the sump and bam...crazy again. Did a large water change and it started working right, but then by the next day, running crazy again. Any ideas on how to get this to stop? My thought it is that it is the epoxy that I used on the rocks, but I would think by two weeks plus later it would have been fine by now. Used all dead rock and live sand. Have a filter sock and Chemi-pure elite, but when in the bucket, these two items didn't impact the skimmer at all (tested that) so I am thinking it's the epoxy. The other day I did about a 7 gallon water change, which got the skimmer working right for about 30 minutes, the crazy again. Did another last night, maybe 15 gallon, and not impact, still crazy.

Any help would be awesome. Trying to get this up and running right. Skimmers always drive me crazy!

What water level are you running it in? Mine is at 8" and never had it overflow.

just give it time. With a tank of new water that isnt really uncommon. With epoxy it is really common. Just give it time. you can let it run with the cup off if need be. but as you do a couple more water changes and you will get it going. I have no doubt.

It's running at about 8", a little more right now since the water level is a little high.

Mojo...hope you're right. It just seems a little long so I was getting concerned. Cup is off since it fills in like two minutes.

Mine over flowed like crazy when I ran it through RO/vinegar for 2hrs. After that I threw it straight into the sump and within 24hrs it was skimmer like a beast. I have used epoxy/super glue in the tank and never had it overflow. It just loses foam head for 30mins to an hour or so. As long as the water level in the sump is consistent, you shouldn't have any problems. Though, Mojo is right, maybe yours need more time to break in.

Thanks for the responses. Hopefully time and water changes do the trick. It's so strange :)

Did another large water change last night and the skimmer calmed, by this morning it was already crazy again. I'm going to do another today and just keep my fingers crossed. I'm beginning to think that whatever is in the water that's making it do this isn't going to leave :squigglemouth:

I went through the exact thing with mine. Ended up splitting at the seams.. Replaced it with a coralife 150 cone... Never got that to work either...Finally got a Reef Octopus 160 and what a difference a lil extra money makes....I mean like 50 bux more and this thing was a total set it and forget it... Just my experience..Good Luck

Did you ever get it working at all? Had mine running in a bucket fine for about a day, but then it pooped out when I put it back in my tank. Thought it was my tank, but maybe it is the unit.

I had nothing but problems...Would run fine for days, maybe a week, and then over flow the cup....First time was my fault, after filter changes, and water change...But, had it happen twice for no reason at all.. After a water change, plugged it back in, and it blew apart at the cone seam....Replaced like i said with the coralife unit, couldnt get that thing to collect anything. Had so move pump to external to get that to fit in the sump... And after that it didnt do nuttin...Was sooo mad. Finally, the Reef Octopus.. GREAT... Honestly, plugged it in, adjusted it, and forget about it... Even after water changes, check the level, adjust if needed, and see ya next week...
