I'm looking to buy a Deltec skimmer for my first tank, 513l/130g 5x2x2. The plan is to run an SPS dominant reef with some LPS and fish stocking will be high, so I was thinking it would better to have a skimmer that would allow me to feed heavy.

I'm looking at two skimmers and would like to know what would be considered too big that it would be inefficient. I'm looking at the Deltec sc1456 and the sc1660.

Would I be ok with the sc1456, is the sc1660 overkill for my tank?

The 1456 would be just fine. My 1660 on a 187g is probably overkill.

What are the pros and cons of having an oversized skimmer?

E.g. would a skimmer rated to 1500l not work well on a 500l tank, or would it work great for 2 days and then not work so well thereafter as there isn't enough to crap skim out of the water?

The down side is that they will tend to run very dry so not as much room to make adjustments. The benefit is if you lose control of your system they will strip nutrients out faster. I feel you want to go on the bigger end of what you think you need without going overboard. I came really close to getting the 1456 for my 187g system but I would have been on the larger size for what it can handle.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking to do, get a skimmer rated a bit more than what I need.

Looks like the SC1456 is the best bet for my size tank.

Thanks for your help Brew12!

No problem!

If you have any questions, Adam from Battlecorals is a R2R sponsor and also sells the Deltec's. He is who I just bought mine from. I'm sure he would be willing to answer any questions you have regarding the Deltec's even if you don't buy through him. Great guy.

lol I wish I could buy from battle corals, their frags look awesome!

Sadly I doubt any US vendors ship to the UK, and even then would it clear customs without any problems and live?

Also, on R2R are you able to tag/mention a member or sponsor to get their attention in a thread e.g. Adam from Battlecorals?

Ah, didn't notice the location!

@Battlecorals should get his attention.
