I have a Reefer 170. I recently changed to a Redsea Reefer Skimmer 300. The unit seems great in itself but I have a problem with noise.

I’m no scientist but the size of this skimmer means it takes up the vast majority of the sump and is very close the the sides - so there is little water volume to dampen down any resonating noise. This resonating manifests itself by way of a ‘hum’ which, in truth, isn’t helped by the fact I have a hard floor.

So I’m thinking I need to change to a smaller foot print skimmer which hopefully also has an efficient pump. Assuming all my logic holds up can anyone suggest an appropriate unit please? I’ve read the Nyos 120 is quiet and some of the more expensive Reef Octopus (with the varioS pumps) are also great. Can anyone confirm please?

Need to change it as its driving the wife mad and that’s not a sensible strategy!

You could try putting a mat under the skimmer and seeing if that helps with the vibrations

That's a bummer, I have the same skimmer, love it, and don't hear a thing out of it. You could try one of the OXO silicon mats.

I would try to put a rubber mat under it to see if that helps, but I will say I have a nyos 160 and it is one of the quietest skimmers I’ve ever seen. There no real humm to it you can really only hear it running if you stick your head under the stand. For the most part you can’t hear it much. It is in our loft area and we spend a good bit of time there with out even noticing it’s on.

Had to bite the bullet and change the skimmer - it was at the stage of either the skimmer went or the wife did. No comments please;)

What new skimmer did you choose and do you love it? I have a Reef Octopus Classic 150SSS. I can hear it in bed. I just took a dB reading. 49dB with the skimmer off and 62dB with it on.
FWIW, it doesn’t bother my wife, but I want to chuck the skimmer out the window.

I went for the Nyos 120 - problem solved thankfully
