I was brain storming nutrient export ideas as far as a refugium or maybe a skimmer. Was thinking of a diy or small protein skimmer for the jbj 12g cube. Do you guys think it would hurt to have one? I seem to find alot of organics still in the water column even after doing 30% wcs every week. WhenI use to use filter floss on the rear overflow it would get full in 3 days.

Wha do you guys and gals think?

I ran one of these for about 3 years and never had trouble with that. I did a 50% water change every month, which a few corals didn’t like due to the swings in some parameters. I know they make skimmers specifically for those and I considered getting one, but my marine pure blocks cut exactly to the middle chamber size worked so well I never ended up buying one. I did dose Dr. Tim’s waste away weekly or I would get a lot of buildup like what you mention.

That organic buildup drive me nuts lol so you used waste away with good results I see? Maybe I should look into trying it.

I think a skimmer is a great idea. When I first got my JBJ 28, it came with a wood airstone skimmer....that I really liked....worked great if you changed out/cleaned the wood airstone frequently.

These little skimmers are easy to DIY....many examples out there.

Yep thats what I was thinking. Using a older gravel vac and using a wood air stone and connecting the line to a collection container.
