After a brief look at other threads I didn't see one pertaining to a question I have. Bear with me please...I have a 125ga tank, currently around two months in. 30ga sump with a refugium. Total water in the system, I'm estimating, is around 100ga. My current residents consist of no fish, two zoanthid colonies, a Duncan, two torch frags, a GSP, a sarcophyton leather, six emerald crabs, two sea hares, and three shrimp. I'm experiencing a hair algae bloom that may be normal ugly phase stuff because my tank is young. My ammonia remains zero but my nitrates are up (near 20 last I measured). I figured I'd finally start up my skimmer which has sat off in the sump until now. It is a H2Pro (came with the sump when I bought it), which, best I can tell is essentially a Coral Box.
Here's my problem:
Every time I turn it on, it quickly fills the collection cup. It literally generates bubbles at a massive rate, straight up the thing, over the top, which quickly turn to water and fill. It will 100% overflow if I don't immediately shut it off. This is regardless of what I try. It has a pump controller I've dialed down to lowest setting, I've tried highest. I've opened intake maximum, and closed to minimum, everything in between, too. I've tried at "ideal" water level indicated on the skimmer, and raised up on crate in sump to effectively lower the level. I can't go "deeper" as I can't raise the level of water in my sump. Slowest bubble production is with intake at max and pump on lowest, but it still just pours over like crazy. This can't be normal. I can't see it being just break-in time either. Is there any trick to this? I've tried to find an informative video on BRS, Youtube, etc. and can't see anyone experiencing this, or, more importantly, what I'm doing wrong. I never assume out-of-the-box it's equipment, it's usually me...any advice?
