I'm going to be getting one soon, and wanted to see if anybody had any reviews on them. Let me know what you think please.

OK, so I ordered the Octopus Automatic Skimmer Neck Cleaner OCT-CL200 for my skimmer. Install and review to come next weekend. This is what I ordered:

Looks kinda complicated, I use a toothbrush a couple times a week, lol. The real question is, who's toothbrush do I use:squigglemouth:

If you look in the Avast forum, there's quite a few reviews on the Swabbie

it looks like a cheap copy to me, but then again i hate sites that use white backgrounds and you cannot actually see the entire product

A cheap copy of what? These are made by the same manufacturer of the skimmer....Reef Octopus. Here it is installed on a skimmer...not mine of course...

Haha, just as long as it not yours, right :)

As for being complicated, you just replace the original lid with this, adjust the blade so its rests on the inside of the neck, and plug it into a timer, or in my case, a controller. Should actually be a very simple setup.

The swabbie is hardly the original skimmer neck cleaner. I believe Deltec has been producing them for many many years...which would mean the swabbie is a cheap imitation of the Deltec :)

Regardless, its an idea which many people can put out there own products to solve, and they probably all work the same. The concept isn't new...there just happens to be new products in the category.

.

You are correct, Deltec Put out a neck cleaner about 6 years ago.

Really? Not that I'm aReef Octo fan (actually justthe Opposite, they screwed me on a warranty repair) , but this post is wrong in every regard!

By the way, in no way was I meaning that the swabbie wasn't a good product in my last post. I don't have any experience with the swabbie, so don't take that as a review of any sort. I was going to buy it, but it was more cost effective to get the Reef Octopus since it includes a lid to replace the original with. Plus, it was cheaper in price by a few bucks with free shipping :)

is it? i dont see how you figure that. this just came out in dec the swabbie has been made for quite some time before that. also it wouldnt be the first time coralvue played the copy and patent b.s.

the swabbie comes with a lid or you can send one in and have it made to fit.
hence the cheap copy. im sure the swabby is not made in china either

It does come with a lid if they make one that fits your skimmer. However, in my case, they do not, hence the reason I'd either have to send mine in, or buy another lid. I wouldn't want to destroy the one that came with it in case I didn't like the swabbie.

I've known of the Deltec one way before I've even heard of the company Avast Marine....not that it would mean much. Regardless, it doesn't really matter, I'm sure they all work very similar. Its not like its a complicated piece of equipment, they all just wipe the inside of the neck...thats it.

it will be when it comes time that someone get worked up about it and all 3 end up sueing eachother.
in that case you would be stuck with something that they wont make parts for nor warantee
have you ever asked them if they would make the lid for that skimmer?

actually there is 4 companies making them that i know of

Unless cleaning a skimmer neck is a patented procedure, I would highly doubt that would happen. If it were, there would only be one manufacturer of skimmers, reactors, lighting, cars, tvs, computers, etc. They can patent their own design, and others are free to design their own product pending it doesn't copy/use somebody else's design.

the procedure has nothing to do with the design. all 4 of them are exact copies. there is no significant differences between any what would warrant another patent.
its nothing like tvs or cars.
most tv makers dont make their own products in the first place. many use the same purchased and patented internals from yet another company.

They don't even look the same, so how are they exact copies of one another? Cause they all wipe the inside of the neck the same way? The Reef Octopus actually wipes with two blades, where the swabbie uses one...sounds different to me.

it doesnt matter! the design is the same period!
coralvue doesnt even make their own products either!
