8.5 - 10 is where I started off with it. I redid my sump earlier this year so I could raise and lower it. I had heard that 6 inches was supposed to be the sweet spot but I'll try raising it up a little more and give it a couple weeks. If it's still working the way it is currently then I'll be in the market for a new skimmer
