I've been out of the hobby for awhile but will be getting a tank this year. The tank with display and sump is roughly 60 gallons. I was hoping to get some recommendations on a reliable skimmer. I have used Bubble Magus in the past with good success. The tank will be heavy LPS with a medium stock of fish.

Would something like a Bubble Magus Curve A5 be overkill? I have used a skimmer that was way too big for the tank and ended up causing more damage than good.

I also don't want to buy something rated too low and under perform which is why I am hesitant on the Bubble Magus NAC3.5

How bout the Aqua Maxx FC80 from MarineDepot, the BM Curve 5 is a love it or hate skimmer.

What about a skimmer with a DC controllable pump? If the skimmer feels oversized you can simply adjust the pump accordingly.

I have an SR Aquaristik Pro-Skim 80 on an 43g system and it’s a bit much for a lightly stocked system like mine. I adjusted the pump to 50% and it works better. If I didn’t have this controllability my only other alternative would be to skim really wet.

Hope this helps.

Hi
I am looking at the SR Aquaristik skimmers. how are your thoughts? I cant find any information on this skimmer online. But the pricing and the build quality/warranty is very attractive. Thanks!

I strongly recommend that you size the skimmer for what you want... right sized, over sized, etc. and let it run. Turning the pump down/up not only messes with the contact time, but also the air input. The best skimmers optimize the body with the contact time with the throughput (usually on accident or by chance for most, it seems). Controllable pumps on a skimmer is not a desirable feature, IME.

For smaller tanks, the smaller Tunze is a beast. 9410?
