Skimmer or Apex controller?

That first pic was when the skimmer was new and all that foam! A year later I’m sure I could raise the water level but never really had too. It make way less foam now

At first I though you took a picture of my tank, LOL! Same sump and skimmer and underneath is also black.

While we’re on skimmers and controllers, I had a great experience this week.

My apex started texting me the skimmer was running higher watts than normal. I found 4 snails sucked into the Venturi blocking the flow.

So my point is keep the skimmer and get the Apex.

You need to clean the volute and the air intake and you will be back to brand new. How often do you clean those 2 things?

Skimmer. Take care of your chemistry and waste. Once tank is rolling well, you can look into the ApexEL which you may even find a used one cheaper. In the meantime, you can use timers placed on a 8-12 outlet power strip to improvise.

Since my skimmer seems to be working that's my goal, took a 3 day vacation from the tank and talk about a nervous break down, LOL!
