Skimmer outlet modification

Sorry if this sounds stupid but other than the direct water. Why do i see people skimmers with elbows added? The outlet will have the exit horizontal and they will add an elbow and extra pipe causing the outlet to now be downward not horizontal. Is this to increase the water in the skimmer body?

Lengthening and redirecting the outflow helps to reduce micro bubbles. I also did it to make sure the outflow wasn't being pulled back into the skimmer intake.

It is also done to reduce the amount of noise.....the return can be extended and/or turned so it is exiting below the waterline.
