Everytime I feed my tangs Formula 2 frozen tang food, the protein skimmer goes haywire and spills over into the overflow bucket. Even when I have the skimmer flow valve closed it happens. I tried shutting off the skimmer when I feed but it stills happens no matter how long I wait to turn it back on?

What type skimmer do you have? My Tangs are feed YAKI SUSHI NORI roasted seaweed $5.00 for 40 large sheets at the Korean store.

Sounds like you have the water level too high in the neck of your skimmer. You should be allowing the bubble to make their way up the tube themselves...this can take a few hours until it is fully dialed in.

Na, its normal for some skimmers to go nuts and froth over when a foreign substance is introduced to the tank. Thaw them out in RO water first as stated above, this will help alot.

Yep, i keep a small net handy to pour it into over the sink then just dip the net into the tank.

I just had this happen after I placed a dipped coral frag back in the tank. My Lifereef skimmer has an overflow tube but I was getting so much foam it was too much for it to handle and it came over the top of the cup.. I was just about to yell at one of my kids for spilling water when I realized the puddle was from the skimmer. My kids had the last laugh... They enjoyed watching me pick up all the "poopy water".... Lol Took a couple days for it to finally calm down.

For all those using protein skimmers: There is a water quality/condition called "surface tension". This has everything to do with protein skimmers foaming or not foaming, no matter the make or brand of protein skimmer, it is a water quality/condition and not a protein skimmer issue.
What this means is that anything added to the aquarium/sump water will have an affect on the foaming of the skimmer, or lack of foaming. Anything added to the water will change the waters surface tension, and the foaming conditions.

Ever notice your protein skimmer stop foaming when you stick your hand/fingers in the water? This is due to skin oils changing the surface tension, and the reduction of foam.

Not all protein skimmer companies make note of this in their instructions (and very few even know about surface tension) leaving the hobbyist to believe their protein skimmer is at fault, which certainly is not the case.

I always advise hobbyists to observe their protein skimmer before adding anything to the water, add the product, then watch what the protein skimmer does. This way you will know what can cause the skimmer to stop foaming, or foam profusely and then know what to expect or to do to avoid water spillage.

Some products such as epoxies, Amquel, Novaqua, StressCoat, and some foods can cause protein skimmers to foam like crazy, and require them to be shut off until they don't overfoam anymore. Other products can cause a reduction of foam such as those fake rubber silicone corals, foods, chemicals, etc.

Bottom line: it is the customers responsibility to observe and to know what products do to the skimmers foaming characteristics.

Just wanted to make note to others who are not aware of this water quality. I get a lot of hobbyists who think their skimmer is at fault for not foaming or overflowing when in fact their skimmer is operating according to what is going on with the water, not the skimmer.
