Skimmer overflowing

I have a bubble magus curve 5 and it has worked fine for about 8 months until I recently replaced the filter sock and cleaned the skimmer now it overflows like crazy any idea on what it could be?

Rinsing a fresh filter sock in some RO/DI water before use can help. New filter socks or used clean ones that are dry can and will do this for a sort period of time. Usually 10-15mims, then the skimmer will settle down.

Could be some chemistry in the new sock, or something about the cleaned skimmer. Is this a new-new sock, or have you used it / cleaned it a few times?

When my skimmer overflows, I direct the drainage hose - open - into a five-gallon bucket. Doesn't generally go too long - an hour or a tad more, maybe a gallon to a gallon and a half, before she settles back down.

If you mean by "cleaned" the skimmer as emptying the cup, it will take a few hours for it to break back in again. Also new filter socks will cause any skimmer to overflow. I have a Curve 5 as well and its quite sensitive to anything foreign in the water and will overflow if so. Like when I do a water change it will want to overflow for a few hours after the water change. Also running some carbon will help in my experience as well.

I removed the skimmer and cleaned it with a sponge for the first time and that is when it overflowed when I have changed the filter socks in the past it was not effected.

Yes if you deep clean your skimmer and remove that slime coat inside the skimmer it will have to break In all over again. At this point all you can do is let it overflow into your sump until the slime layer builds back up.

It has been acting up for a day now so I think it has to do with cleaning the skimmer.

Strange I deep clean my bubble magus 7 around ever 6 months and never have a problem with it overflowing etc after i plug it back in.

It's the new filter sock. Take new socks and put them in washing machine on a rinse cycle with only water and then dry before using them in your tank

Agreed, likely something in the filter sock from manufacturing. Had this happen to me once before. A good wash in RO/DI water or a quick zip through the washing machine and let it dry out usually does the trick

No detergents, bleach only and rinse well. Let dry and then use.

i put all my filter socks in the washing machine all the time and my skimmer still goes nuts

I break my BM Curve 5 down every 6 mos or so and give a deep clean and never have to break it in again. I do have to rinse any new or cleaned socks or it will over flow though. Its usually only an issue for a half hour or so.

Me to i clean my skimmer about every 6 months and works prefect after and i will give it a go rinsing my socks before i use them.

Epoxy will definitely cause the skimmer to overproduce, but this should be temporary- like 30 min or so at the latest. I would agree and suspect something in the filter sock.
