skimmer overflowing

since yesterday the collection cup is overflowing with water within few seconds. nothing changed recently. Normally i used to clean the collection cup every week and it wont even fill in half with all those waste. It was working like that for more than 6 month now..

1) now the over flowing water (from the collection cup) is flowing back into the tank.. is that ok?

2) I tried adjusting the skimmer to fully open/fully close monitored for few minutes but it's still the same... any idea what could be the issue?

Happens sometimes.. adjust the outlet so it is full open..
My bet is that in a day or so, everything is back to normal.

It is... I have taken the drain plug out of the collection cup in situations like this in the past.
Fwiw, my skimmer went bonkers just a few days ago. 5+ year established SPS tank... Same situation as you. Day later, I had to crank the valve back down again...

As long as the skimmer is putting out clear water (not skimming) it’s fine. Did you clean it really good recently? That will cause that.

I always have skimmer problems as well. Only thing I may add is if you recently dosed something new. That may have set it off.

I turn mine off every time I replace a filter sock.
