I have a reef octopus classic 150-int skimmer that's rated for I think 120 gallons that I got for Christmas for a future build. On my current tank which is 29g with a 5 g sump just has a little hob skimmer. I've had slight algae issues for awhile now and I think it could be in part of the hob skimmer. If I was to throw this new skimmer in my sump, would it be bad? Would it take out too many nutrients for stuff to survive?

Edit: I did look up my current Skimmer online to see what it was rated (CPR Bak Pak 2) and it says for tanks up to 60 gallons.

no, that skimmer won't take out "too many nutrients" as skimmers can only remove ~30% of the organics from your water column, and those organics are just about the same for almost all models of current skimmers. So in answer to your question, it won't overskim, as there is not a way to do that physically. It may not produce enough foam to skim properly, and that may cause more issues than skimming too much. It's really the opposite, not skimming enough with the new skimmer. If you don't get the foam bubbles out, you won't be skimming anything out.
On another note, the algae isn't coming from your other skimmer. If it is inside the HOB skimmer, then take it off and clean it out. o_O Seriously.

If I were you, I would definitely put that other skimmer on though. I've used that exact skimmer and it is an awesome skimmer; I really like Reef Octo stuff though, and I love new equipment on the tank.

Haha I didn't mean the algae was inside the skimmer. I just meant maybe algae was forming due to a lack of skimming done by my current skimmer.

But that's sweet to hear about your experience with octo skimmers. I think I'm gonna try to get this bad boy in the sump tonight. Thanks!
