Purchased a used reef octopus sx160 skimmer for my little display tank. Not sure how this will end up but I figured I'll document it.

Tank-
15 gal frag 20x18x9 AIO.
Drilled AIO for herbie overflow

Sump-
Advanced acrylics custom 21 gal sump with 225gph return pump

Light-
Nanobox tide M with bluefish app
10wt amazon LED for chaeto

Salt-
Instant Ocean

Fish-
1 sixline wrasse
1 gold stripe tomato clownfish
1 purple firefish (can't catch him to send him to lfs)

Inverts-
3-5 redclaw hermits
2-3 snails (forget the name)
1 serpent star with perfect Dallas Cowboys star :)
1 peppermint shrimp
1 random pink/rosey red shrimp

Wavemaker-
Currently jaboe
WQD mp10 in the closet

Skimmer-
Eshopps nano skimmer which has been retired (magnet is very weak)
Reef Octopus Diablo xs-160 (just installed and picking up skimmate within minutes!)

Corals (all frags)
5 different zoas (so new to reeling I have no clue of names)
1 pink lobo
1 green birdsnest
1 Duncan
1 gold hammer

Heavy Feedings-
(One cube per day)
Frozen mysis
Frozen brime
Frozen veggies
Occasional freeze dried plankton

Reefroids x1 per week
Coral Frenzy x1 per week

5-10 gal weekly water change

Today's params

Ammonia 0.00
Nitrate 0.00
NitRite 0.00 (API test kits)
Dkh 10.1 Hanna checker
Phosphate .82 Hanna checker
Calcium 410 Red Sea
Magnesium 1480 Red Sea

Almost quit after my first catastrophic biocube bust (literally) and since I could not sell my sump, I got the itch to try again, hence the frag over my biocube stand.

My nano skimmer would not perform well due to the magnet and locations available in my sump. Seen a recent skimmer for sale and pulled the trigger and figured if I like reefing enough, I'll have the skimmer for a bigger tank.

So here it is, my 2nd run at salt and I'm curious how a ginormous skimmer would perform on approximately 25gal of water.

Ty for looking or giving any feedback to a semi new reefer :)

Ehh ive got two Kessil A360we on a 20g long and a skimmer rated for 125 gallons, no such thing as overkill!

that's refreshing! Is it reef or a fish setup? assuming reef since the dual kessil. What benefits have you noticed for having such a huge skimmer?
So far my only drawback is how loud it is. It sounds like the air from a jet lol. Ive read it takes 2-3 weeks to break in for my particular skimmer. One positive thing is my skimmer chamber is like a typhoon! water is spinning in circles at a pretty high rate.

I think the hardest part of using an oversized skimmer is that it's hard to really get dialed in. Mine is oversized quite a bit and I'm constantly needing to fine tune it.

I did read this issue a few times in searching the oversized skimmer.
Since water level plays a big role in a skimmer, could running a higher than recommended water level compensate for the constant adjustment?

Honestly couldn't tell you. I'm running a recirculating skimmer so water height shouldn't matter all that much in my case. I think it has more to do with efficiency and what it is able to skim out of the water. I can go 2-3 days with out bubbles making its way up the neck and then the next thing I know is its overflowing. The nutrients reach a point where the skimmer can efficiently get get it out and it goes crazy.
