skimmer problem

had a problem with my skimmer over night. got up after 4 hours of sleep for work and my cup was almost full in a 4 h our period. I never had this issue before. it's been running forabout 3 months and broken in by now. I unplugged it and emptied it. I didn't adjust the flow to it at all and again it filled up within a couple minutes. did the same thing again. empty and ran it. sure enough not more than 3 minutes if that the cup was full. so took it out to the garage and filled a tote with water and a small amount of vinegar. didn't know how much to use per gallon so I just filled the lid of the bottle 3 times. and by the time I got home it looks a lot cleaner after running it for 9 hours in vinegar water. I did learn that for some reason the skimmer won't run with just fresh rodi water without anything in it. but it seems to be working right for now. any suggestion. and normally how long should I be running the skimmer for on a daily basis? skimmer type is a eshopps psk-100h.

Usually skimmers don't over skim when they are dirty. Something was added to the water to make this happen or your skimmer was not set up right from the beginning. Another thing that will make them overflow is when the airline becomes restricted somehow.

60 g tank
60 lbs of dry rock when first started.
live sand
2 heaters.
just added red mangroves
7 fish
cuc of emerdald crabs and snails
the airline sounded like it was clogged. a bit. but it sounds fine now.
the mangroves might of been the cause of it. a root and a small piece of leaf might of gotten into it. gonna have to cover the intake of the skimmer with something so it doesn't happen again.
