Skimmer pump speed question

I have a regal 250sss on my tank that has the adjustable speed varios pump currently running full blast from install and i have never changed the speed setting

what would be a senario where i would slow it down or speed up the pump?

During feeding times, many peeps including myself will ramp it down along with the return pump during feeding. When the return is turned down the sump water raises. If you don't back off the skimmer pump it will likely overflow...
