A friend has a 150 gallon system. It looks good and was surprised when i saw a super skimmer 120 sitting in the sump. I was shocked the only additional filtering thing he does is carbon dosing. His nitrates are never above 10 at phosphates are under 0.02. He empties the cup 2-3 times a week. Water changes once a month. His tank is about a year old.

After asking if i thought he needed a larger skimmer i do not know how to answer. Would a proper sized skimmer make any difference? His system is mixed SPS, although i saw no acro or milli. Lots of LPS and about 7 fish. 2 large both being tangs.

Rated Skimmer sizes are so variable and personally feel that a properly balanced Reeftank can get away with a minimal Skimmer depending on Coral types chosen. I ran just a small Eshopps #75 HOB Skimmer on my system for quite sometime while it was primarily LPS and Softies, was probably one of my most healthy and enjoyable systems I've had set up.

Cheers, Todd
