Set up a used skimmer in the sump today and when turned on, it is quite loud, nothing exteme but definitely noticable.

But I noticed when you cover the air silencer hole with your finger, the noise almost completely goes away.
Considering it's a used unit I had a couple questions.

1) Is that suppose to be covered? Or remain open the way it is
2) Or are you suppose to put water in there, seems like there's 2 tubes in there.
3) Could it be cause it's now breaking in?

Thanks you

First you want the silencer open with no water in it. you could try to quite it down by putting filter floss in the silencer or running an air line from silencer to outside or behind the tank.

Oh okay thanks for the advice, didn't know you could open it up, tried to and it seemed sealed.
I'll try again.

If I do put filter floss, fill it like a quarter way?

Most of the reef octopus ones I have felt with are but not 100% sure if you yours is but if it isnt your could always make your own kinda of reactor out of pvc for floss

Yeah I guess this one isn't able to come off.
But I did notice if I cover half of the air/water intake the noise does go down substantially.

Is that alright or does that take away from the efficiency and Rating of Gallons?

Sorry for all the questions

Yes blocking it will effect the efficiency of the skimmer

Seems like most skimmers have some sort of valve or adjustment to regulate the amount of air going into the skimmer. Mine does, and when I removed it, it got considerably louder. What brand skimmer is it? Maybe you could google it and see what a new one looks like.
