so looking into getting a new skimmer. But the one I am looking at says it needs 7 to 9 inches of water in sump. I am around 5 inches. Does that really matter or as long as the pump on skimmer is covered?

If you can't provide the correct water depth for said skimmer it'll never run right. It's like trying to run regular grade gasoline in a car that requires premium. It never ends well.

Thank u I found one just ordered the red Sea rsk 300 it recommends 6in and no I just rase water a inch. Thanks for the input

I'm glad that you were able to find a skimmer that meets the water height requirement - as others have mentioned it really does matter. Do you have an ATO to keep the water height stable (especially since you are so close to the minimum)?
