Hi,

I have a skimmer size question... I have a 60 gallon reef with an Eshopps refugium sump (R 100), which probably holds 15 or 20 gallons. I also have a reef octipus NWB 110 skimmer. So here is the question...I am toying with getting a new skimmer. I am looking at either the bubble King Mini 180 (100-200 gallons) or the Reef Octopus XP SSS-3000 (300 Gallons). Both are over rated for my tank size, but I have a heavy bio load (fish wise), and I like to feed my corals allot. So, I want a powerful skimmer. Would these skimmers be too much for my tank? Should I go smaller? I was looking to get the biggest skimmer I could fit in the sump. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

there is no such thing as too big of a skimmer. if you can afford it and it fits in your sump get it. i would prob get the reef octopus that way if you decide to upgrade one less thing you have to buy

That is some of the worst advice I have ever read...

The skimmers you are looking at are WAY TOO BIG !!!! a 60gal. the skimmer you have isnt bad. but a big upgrade would be the SRO 1000 maybe, maybe the SRO 2000 int. THe seaside cs1, tunze 9006. ect... if you want a bk mini the 160 is way more than enough skimmer. You will be so dissapointed if you buy one of those monsters listed above. the neck size on them is so big that your tank will maintain a much higher levels of DOCs and your skimmer will not produce more just because its bigger. it will actually produce less skimmate.
you dont have to take my word on it, But I can tell you that you will be unhappy wasting your money on something that isnt going to work.

Not trying to float my boat by any means. But ask around. I am one of the biggest resources for skimmer questions on many of the boards. its just a hobby of mine within a hobby. HAte to see you waste your money.

good luck and God bless.

Thanks you both... I think that will narrow my search down to either the BK 160 (which I am leaning towards), or the XP 2000...or maybe the 1000. Do you think the BK is worth the $$? I have some high end chalices and corals in there that I want to make sure have the best available to them. I have already sprung for the Radion and 2 mp-10s...

I guess I was just thinking about the monster size skimmers in the event of an upgrade, I really cant see my self going much bigger than a 100 reef, due to my inability to control my spending on expensive corals...

Trust me mojo knows skimmer and running to big of a skimmer is a waist of electricity. Most if the time they just idle and don't pull anything out.

Thanks. I've been doing some research on skimmers in here, and I have come to the same conclusion...this guy knows his stuff
