I have a new system which has a packaged skimmer. I've spent the last week and a bit making the filtration of my system quieter however I've now turned the skimmer on and it hums rather loudly. It's not vibrating the sump or stand a very much so I think a replacement pump at some point is in order.

My question ultimately is with my 140L system (36US/G) could I get away with running my skimmer on a timer for when I'm not home or when i'm in my room watching TV

a) 0700 - 1800 daily
b) 24hrs except 1745 - 2200

Essentially allowing me to watch TV and/or sleep in the room next door without the skimmer running?

I'll have 1-2 fish before I look to replace the pump with something quieter.

Now, I know the first option will be run for 24 hours but would it be really harmful to run it less.

I only run mine when I go to bed at night and turn it off in the morning before leaving for work along with my refugium light. As long as your parameters stay in check only running it at night you will be fine.
Mine is noisy as well but works good.

Oh good to know. I could happily run mine from 0600-1745 (ish) if my system allows. I guess it'll be about doing regular test to make it's keeping up.
