Skimmer selection vs tank size

I have a 135g tank with a 40g sump. When selecting a sump, should I look for something that can handle a 175g heavy bioload? Or still choose based on 135?

I think you may have meant skimmer on your question there. In any case, I'm also new but it is my understanding you want a skimmer that can handle the grand total amount of water in your set up, display + sump.
