So I have been doing some searching for a skimmer for my new setup, which will be a 50 gallon breeder with a 40 gal sump. My top 2 choices are the swc 160 or 180, but for that price I was thinking I'd be getting a better bang for my buck going with a avast DIY skimmer. Any suggestions? Ive also heard a lot of good things about octopuss.

Any input will help guys. I should also mention this will be heavily stocked and I may tap another tank to the sump later. Do you guys think I might be going too big of a skimmer?

I have a reef octopus NWB-150 a great skimmer really reliable and consistent. I also run a percision marine redline 100 also a great skimmer easy to adjust. There is a great skimmer thread on here i will try to find it and post it on your thread. It has about 45 to 50 different skimmers on it that have been evaluated.

Honestly i would get the 150bmk over the 160 cone in your spot. With a 50g display you don't need to spend the extra cash. If you have to get a cone the SRO1000, swc160 cone, XP1000 would be my suggestion. HTH
