Back in the day I had an ASM G4 skimmer running on a 250 gallon Marineland Deep Dimension tank. I had what I thought was a high bioload with an eel, stingray and a couple of tangs. I was never really able to collect a lot of skimmate even with adding an ugly egg crate stand I made (lack of skills!)
Fast forward to today. I’ve ordered a waterbox 220 and I’m told one day it will actually arrive :) I have a Reef Octopus Elite 200. The water level in the sump will be 10” I’m told. I believe the suggested water level for this skimmer is 8”? So my question to the group is if a stand is really necessary here? Will the performance be that much less if I go without a stand?

Good question and it probably depends a lot on the skimmer. Mine has both a variable speed pump and a flow regulator and it is less critical about water level with those controls. But I have it on a platform so it's at the proper height anyway. They should be easy to build. A chuck of old egg crate or acrylic, 4 chunks of PVC pipe for legs.
