Hey reefers, we need help choosing a skimmer so I'd like to hear some suggestions. The tank is going to be a red sea reefer 750xxl. This build will take a while and the price range for the skimmer is between 500-700 dollars. Looking for good performance, reliability and good customer service. Thank you all in advance for suggestions.

+1 for reef octopus. Breaks in quickly, super silent operation, never given me an issue.
Coralvue customer service is awesome as well. Any issues they'll get you taken care of
This one may be a good fit for you

I use the elite 220 on my 255gallon. The DC pump is super quite and the skimmate is nice.

I also wanted to add. If I were going to look at new skimmer I would review the deltec and the skimz as well. I saw a video of the skimz foam that looked like shaving cream. I guess it takes a bit of tinkering with any skimmer to get that kind of skimate but that was impressive. I have never used those, but people rave about them.

Have had no issues getting eshopps to answer questions.

But only owned mine since November hard to give an honest review tbh.

Are you looking at any bells and whistles in particular? Dc? Recirculating, etc?

I run an eshopps S-300 4th gen on my 180. The needle wheel busted at 8 months possibly do to small snails... replaced it and it just hasn't been right since. Taken it apart a few times and just never seem to get the skim mate I want... prior it would overflow unless it was almost all the way open... now almost 3/4 closed and still skimming very dry.. Im thinking the pump got partly burnt out as it was still running with the broken needle wheel. Psk-1200 might actually be a little undersized also... Im looking into my options. SO if this happens to be it just burnt out it was an awesome skimmer at first and super easy for maintenance.

Thank you for that, I like to hear the pros and cons.

I am running the Santa Monica Filtration Surf2X in my Red Sea Max S400. It floats in the sump and started creating algae on day 3 while following instructions that came with the unit. I'm sure for your tank you may need something bigger, however, they make larger units. If you have room in your sump, this brand is working for me.

Here is the website: http://www.santa-monica.cc

Pro: Small and gives you the ability to add more to your sump since it just floats in your water. Also, they were very quick to answer questions for me.

Con: Expensive and needs an air pump to push water into it (don't buy a cheap noise one like I did)

I just realized you wrote Skimmer and not Scrubber. My bad! I agree with Crabs Mcjones, Reef Octopus is the way to go. Had one years ago and it was easy to dial in.

A scrubber is still an option too so your suggestion is much appreciated. Reef octopus is high up on the radar.

I would say either reef octopus like everyone else is saying. It’s affordable and is built to last. But if whatever reason the dimensions didn’t work for you, I would recommend deltec. The good thing in today’s time is we all have a lot of great skimmers especially when you have an appropriate budget. Best of luck and we are all excited to see the build!
