Probably more of a question for the equipment thread but, when is a good time to empty the water tank on a skimmer? I have the aquaticlife mini skimmer (i know, cheap but a better one is coming in a couple weeks).

If it's skimming, nobody cares how cheap it is.

I usually empty mine if it close to full when skimming wet (lots of water and looks like tea) or when the overflow rim in the cup is covered with a thick coating of greenish or brown sludge when skimming dry (lots of sludge and not much water).

Before it gets full and overflows.
Mine drains into a 5 gallon jug. I empty it when its about 3/4 full

I do something similar. I do a drain hose to a quart jar and empty about half full. Save me from having to take the top off my skimmer except for when I give it a good cleaning about once a month

I cleaned my skimmer cup and neck after about a year, prompted by someones suggestion. Took a whole month to get it dialed back in. Will never do that again.

I do just the cup, not the main skimmer body. Yeah, that can screw that up for a while. I made that mistake.

So when its all brown and gross i should empty and clean?

I'm not sure anyone else but you would touch that gross stuff. So clean away.

Yea i just wasn't sure on how dirty it is supposed to get before i decide to clean it... i mean its been running for less than 48hrs and already is brown... so i wasn't sure if cleaning it every day would be a bit excessive or is it actually what i need to do

If your anal clean everyday.
If your a good reef keeper, once a week. Just like water changes.
If your an old timer then its when you remember to do it.

Im a extremely new reefer so good reef keeper is definitely not where i am yet, but i could definitely see me doing a cleaning once a week
