I have a aquamax cones hob skimmer on a 30 gallon tank... It's seriously overkill. But it's a little over 2 years old. I have clean it out 3 or 4 times, but one was only a month ago... It's not terribly loud and that's the reason I cleaned it a month ago... But it had a huge body with a see through panel on the back... I'm thinking about getting it, using the plumbing and pump it came with and simply adding a chaeto light to the see through panel and adding the green! Personally I think it's an awesome idea that can be just as effective if not more with the guarentee benefit of oxygen and most importantly much more quiet but I'd love to hear some others thoughts

Interesting idea. You should make it a DIY thread. In fact, I have a huge collection cup off an old Aqua Medic Turbo Floater skimmer and you've got me thinking. Maybe an led light up the center shaft and some macro algae in the cup that surrounds the shaft... a DIY turf algae scrubber?

Thanks for the only response, my skimmer has a large housing 2.5-3 gallons around the body, my thought was that I could slap on a Innovative Marine AUQA Gadget Chaetomax 2-in-1 9W Refugium LED (copy/paste) and let her rip

Seems reasonable to me, but I'd love to see links to the hardware you are talking about, or photos of the equipment you already have.

I went into the garage yesterday and got out my skimmer collection cup so I could consider the idea some more.

To keep noise down I'm considering clear (vinal?) Lines with 90degree fittings rather than all hard lined
