I picked up a used setup off craigslist and the skimmer is pretty over sized. The tank is a 90g with 20g sump and the skimmer is rated for 300 gallons under normal stocking and 200 gallons with a heavy load. I've got two clownfish in qt. and a clean up crew that came with the tank. Would it be best to possibly only run them skimmer for half the day or just wait until my nutrients build up to start running it? I've got a few softies and lps frags already in the tank so I don't want to zero out the nutrients.

If it matters the skimmer is a hydor 705 recirculating skimmer.

Yes rub it 24/7 as you will benefit from the oxygen in introduces and prevent fluctuations in oxygen and ph

What's your stocking like? If there are very little nutrients in the water will that effect the skimmers performance?

A skimmer too large will not consistently skim and probably be a pain to tune with periods of it skimming nothing punctuated with it overflowing. I've an Alpha 200 on a 100, it's taken a while to get it to skim consistently.

What is the actual skimmer make/model?

Hydor Performer 705 recirculating.

If you plan on over stocking the tank or carbon dosing (especially biopellets) then it's good to over do the skimmer.
