Skimmer troubles

I have a skimz skimmer with a qps1.2 an it started giving an error code e4 witch means it ran dry. So i restarted it a few times an it would run for a few seconds an give that same code. I took it apart to clean it to see if a snail was lodged some where, an I noticed 3 holes inside the pump where the impellers shaft goes. Are they supposed to be there I never remember seeing them before.

The top hole looks like it’s made like that but the lower one is a lot less uniform.

Looks like something got hot in there. But im not familiar with that unit.
