So my octo 110 classic skimmer just is not cutting it anymore. I replaced the original pump 3 years ago and now this pump seems to be weakening and I clean the pump at least twice a year and more lately with it struggling. Personally I think it is how the replacement pump attaches. Anyway I am considering getting a clarisea for my 65gal. Question i have is for those using filter rollers currently can it be used in place of a skimmer in your experience. Trying to decide if roller is making skimmers obsolete.

I dont have an answer for you on the roller..but the major reason I like the skimmer is gas exchange. If you go skimmerless, make sure you have a plan for gas exchange.

Can certainly run a tank without a skimmer or a roller. Having said that... in my opinion a roller does not replace a skimmer. As @BroccoliFarmer mentioned a skimmer does more than just filtration. They also work differently and a skimmer can remove particles that get through your roller.
