Skimmer

Ive only ever ran "cheap" skimmers, but the aqua one G220 is a good one for it's price. It's rated for 200 gallons HOB or in sump and should retail for roughly $100- $120. Mine pulls out ALOT of gunk from my 24gal and I'll put it on my 120 when it's up and going. It's very sensitive to water level changes though.

To be honest, an often overlooked and very high performer is the Red Sea CSkim 1800. I run one on my 150 and love it. It's large and boxy and doesn't have the sleek, refined look of many skimmers, but it's very powerful and easily cleaned.

I think skimmers are mostly overated. Cheap skimmers like bak paks or red sea have worked for 6+ years for me.. If you have a nice refugium set up you will be fine AND your tank will be more healthy as most of us know the coral compete directly with the skimmer for nutrients. Also vitamins and other essential organic compounds will be removed from the water and could lead to deficiences if you overskim the reef tank.

I can agree with that. I think overall health is better without using a skimmer. The reason I chose to have one on my new setup is because its barebottom and I plan to stock very heavily. The skimmer gives the ability to carbon dose, and I have a pellet reactor and pellets on standby for when I get fully stocked.

Total contradiction ;)

A little perhaps. I just felt with this setup that a skimmer would be a good choice to help with nutrient removal. I want to pack a bunch of fish in this 40... Like a dozen or something crazy. Without am effective way to remove nitrate that wouldn't be possible. This is why I chose to carbon dose.
