I'm new at salt water tanks and need some advice about skimmers. I set up a 65g tank with a 20g sump. I currently do not have a skimmer. The price of skimmers is far too high to purchase one so I'm looking at building my own. The plans I've seen have 4' to 6' skimmers. Huge! I'd like to put an in sump skimmer and need plans for it to fit under my tank stand. Is it OK to modify these plans to adjust the height? Is it really necessary to have 4' tall skimmer? Anybody?

Hi b9ofus, welcome to Reef2Reef, I have moved this thread into a forum where I think you will get more help.

First off Welcome to Reef2Reef. No skimmers don't need to be 4 foot tall you just need to find one that will fit you needs, designs are unlimited. But before anyone could tell you if that design could be made shorter we kinda need to know which one your talking about.

JR,

Another idea is the used market... You can get a very nice skimmer for around $200. What is your budget, even DIY you are going to be in the $150 range I would think.

In that case, no, you really can't reduce the height very much and have an effective skimmer. Do a little more digging, and you will find some DIY plans that involve a needle wheel pump that will be far more effective.

Do you have a budget in mind?

take a look at hte vertex in 100. they are $198 new and would be a great skimmer for your setup. To build a quality skimmer you will have almost that in material, pump and parts to make it right. I have been looking into some diy skimmer stuff. and the price adds up real fast.
But good suggestions too try to find a nice used skimmer. Even an older octopus nw 150 would work. Gosh I think you can get one of those used under $100 now. I think you will pleased with the vertex in 100 for sure though.
Good luck.
BTW I am Mojo~ from RC and have review many skimmers including the one suggested. I have owned most of the big names on the market too... Alpha, Bubbleking, ATB, warner marine, ect...

I have to agree with the other guys...go with a used skimmer. It is worth the investment and you can probably get a great deal.
