Skimmerless Sump?

Off the wall question here... Does anyone run a small footprint sump without a skimmer in it? Reason I ask is, I didn't have room for a sump with my old stand. I invested $200 in a Reef Octopus Bh-1000 (HOB) and I love it. I am in the process of building a DIY stand and will have room now for a small sump (About 24-28 wide). I know sumps have a skimmer section, but are you able to use that section for something else? I was leaning towards this one. It's the Eshopps R-100 Refugium.

IMO - you should be able to use that appartment to whatever you want - only the sky sets the limit
