what is everybody's fav skimmer for around 45-55 gal. or is it better to go bigger than what i need incase of an upgrade. the only prob is the upgrade will probably be to a 150 gal, so a skimmer for that size may be waaaay overkill. what are your opinions? i have fish and corals just fyi

I went bigger on my setup just in case I went bigger on my tank in the near future. I'm a big fan of the Reef Octopus skimmers. I run the Super Reef Octopus 3000sss Internal. Best skimmer I've ever had.

thats probably a good idea since that'll def be able to handle to upgrade when and if it ever happens haha. the upgrade will require me to buy a new house... mines not on a slab, its a really old house, so the 1000+lbs of tank and then the 3-4 people looking at it, i can just see the floor give way, and then everyone's wet. haha

I love my Reef Octopus 110 and love it. It skims nicely and now it's breaking in after the 2 week mark. That's my vote!

i used a couple diff ones on my 40. right now i have the aqua c remora with maxi jet 1200 and i am very pleased. compared to the other skimmers i have used the aqua c is light years ahead. the spray injection is a lot more efficient than the venturi skimmer imo. it is also very affordable and if you dont mind buying one used even better. mine cost me 60 shipped with pump and pre-skimmer box which i highly reccomend if your not running an overflow/sump. it skims all that nasty junk right off the top.

that was used. i hate to refer you to another site bc r2r is the best i think lol....but go to www.nano-reef.com and check out there hardware classifieds you can find all kinds of goodies for cheap. i posted a want to buy ad and within a week had 5 people trying to sell me their used aqua C so it drove the price way down. i saw a couple mp20s for around 140 too. thatd make a great powerhead.

Reef Octopus and Aqua C (Remora) are great plug and play designs. If you clean them regularly (quarterly run in a bucket of vinegar water) you'll get many years of daily or near daily skimmate collection.

I had awesome luck w/ my swc160 w/ all the mods luke could throw at me...

but i would have to say my best one thus fair is the swc 300 cone I just got from him...

I have always been a diehard downdraft skimmer fan... got turned on to these a while ago and haven't looked back!!! although i do still love the downdraft aetech skimmers!

It may be a bit higher than you were originally trying to spend, however, the BM NAC7 is by far the best skimmer I have ever owned. Brand new they are right around $215 It has a very small footprint which is great for small tanks, and it is completely silent. It is rated up to 180 gallons but I am using it on my 60 :)

yeah i wish my aqua c had a bigger collection cup. right now i am having to empty everyday which is good and bad i guess.

I'm trying to get a neck cleaner for my skimmer to see how it works. Very interested to see if I get the results like they did for the swabbie.

I just take my skimmer apart and clean it every week.
The neck is caked with heavy sludge in one weeks time.

I do not know much about aqua c's can it be tapped? So you can add a drain line into a gallon jug or something similar?

Yeah, I'm just trying to get so where it stays clean all the time. It just helps with my laziness :)

Bubble magus makes a decent skimmer for a very reasonable price, not quite as sturdy as some but does the job. Also heard Vertex skimmers have great bang for the buck but not so sure on their pumps.
