Skimmers

hi,

I am new to saltwater reef tanks. I have the new eshopps s-300 in a 125 gallon tank. This skimmer is noisey. I here it throughout my house. A constant humming and vibration. if that’s how I can explain it. Is this normal for this pump. I called eshopps and they are sending me a new pump. But. I have a feeling it’s gonna be the same. I wish it was quiet so I couid hear the water more . Anybody have experience with this. Is there a quieter skimmer .

I find the Reef Octopus classics to be on the quite side but you still hear them.

Wondering if the skimmer is touching anything else in the sump, that could cause a vibration. Also does it have rubber feet on bottom.
Let’s hope the replacement pump works. I agree noise like that drives me nuts. All I focus on it the noise like a woodpecker in my brain

Eshopps, not my favorite choice, you have it now and to address your concerns, try placing the unit on a filter pad which will dampen the hum and vibration. I don't favor rubber pads as they mat leach susbstance.

I have a super reef octopus. It is an old design but it works great and is quiet. Reef Octopus has a pile of different models.

What is considered quiet. This is my first experience with a skimmer. The lfs in which I bought this skimmer told me it’s one of the best and quietest. I told him I here it throughout my entire house. They told me I really have nothing to compare too and this is one of the quietest ones. I’m so confused. Eshopps sent me a new pump to try. I really don’t think it will make a difference . I hear the pump over my overflows etc .

I have the reef octopus s-130 and it is literally dead silent - tank is in the kitchen.

You can by a silicone mat. The ones sold for setting you dishes on to dry. And place it under you skimmer. It’s helps big time with reducing the vibration noise!

+1 to this I always put my return pumps on and skimmers if they don’t have rubber feet on silicone mats. Also someone mentioned make sure it isn’t resting against anything in the sump.

I have found quiet to some people isn't quiet to others. For me quiet means quiet. The pump (not skimmer) in my sump is quieter than water flowing between the sections of my sump where I can hear a very light trickle depending on water level in my return. It is totally inaudible and passes the "wife test". With this in mind I would keep shopping and return it if you feel it doesn't meet your quiet standard. I returned a pump that I was told was quiet and if FOR SURE didn't meet my "quiet bar". I have learned at this point to make sure before I buy that I can return same day to my local store after taking home and doing a test in fresh water.

To be fair, vibrations are different than quiet. If noise is coming from a vibration not sure I can blame that on the pump. Possible some pumps vibrate more than others I suppose. I have not done enough testing to verify this.

I have a super reef Octopus, the 500 gallon size. So it is a big honking skimmer. And when it is on, it is silent. I have to look at it to tell whether it is running. I think the noise in any skimmer is from the motor.
