I am about to skin my 2x4 frame and can't make up my mind about thickness of plywood. I have narrowed it down to either 1/2'' or 1/4''.
The frame is sturdy already so that isn't an issue, either thickness will prevent racking.
Total weight is a concern and durability

Also, another option for the front would be a 1x6 hardwood frame and just add doors to complete. the side would get the ply with a narrower hardwood frame boarder.

Any advice, suggestions or tips?

Just bought a sheet of 1/2''. Ill be starting the cuts this week after I make a ripping jig for straight cuts with a circular saw.

i used 5/8 oak ply and faced mine with real oak. then just used primed trim. i knew i was gonna paint it i just wanted the oak grain in the finish

i got them at the habitat reuse store in the 5 points area, saved me some time. they have all shapes and sizes. I also recommend kreg jigging the piece in between them in the front in case you need to remove your sump ever without tearing it down you can just unscrew it.

I didn't even think to go to the Habitat Restore. They always have tons of cabinets, wood and building materials. I will be making a trip by there today for sure.

The Habitat Restore in Decatur usually has a lot better selection of cabinet stuff. Huntsville one is pretty good also though. I just prefer Decatur one.

I used 1/2" on the one I started working on before I had to leave for Korea. It's not done yet, but here is a sneak preview. I will start a full blown build thread when I return and can work on it again....BTW the sump is going to be in another room so I opted for shelves instead of doors.

Very nice! :)

it is a 45 tall and the reuse store you linked was the correct one. Table saw rips so much nicer than the circular saw by the way. you can get a decent black and decker jobsite saw for 125ish bucks at lowes if you plan on doing more with it.
Very nice. Is that a 45 tall? Where did you get the doors?

Thanks y'all! I'm using a circular saw. Trim is the key ;). LOL. I will have a table saw soon. The circular saw us a pain in the behind to TRY and keep straight. Plus I am really impatient, so the cuts are not great. Wood putty and trim are my friends!!

FYI to all non-pro/first time stand builders...
I stumbled across a "rip guide" while browsing around and when I searched for DIY rip guide I found a number of videos explaining how to make them. They claim perfectly straight plywood cuts every time if you use these to rip ply.
Ill be making one of these for sure when I skin my frame(hopefully I can find the time this weekend.)

Nice! Thanks for posting that. I was going to do that but wasn't sure on how to get it done. I don't know why I never think about youtube for this kind of stuff. Heck, everything is on there!

Just got my doors for my stand at the reuse store. $6 for both doors, hidden hinges and knobs. I went with the basic style door that was real wood over ornate MDF doors. MDF is really heavy.

Looks good! I love the habitat restore deals! Plus it supports a great organization too.
