slow releasing carbon source

So I wondered if it possible to make my own "solid" carbon source which slowly decomposes (in a few days or preferably a week) and releases a small dose of carbon into the water. E.g. use agar agar with vinegar/vodka. Something like that. I would like to use this for my donovan nitrate destroyer.

Biopellets do not release a substantial amount of carbon into the watercolumn... else biopellets would work instantly and not 6 weeks.
