Small aptasia with big foot?

I moved the plug front and center, I even attached one to a frag plug to see if it does anything different in a higher par. Luckily, these are not in my main display system. Here they are under white light. Tonight I will try to get images of them at lights off under white light too.

So aptasia has about 50 species within the group, and I may have found one that resembles yours

That’s my luck, apparently I’m breeding new pest anemones over hare I love how we can still be stumped by stuff in a reef tank that just appears out of the blue. There’s like 1 hermit and two snails… a ton of pods, a few frags and no fish. I literally just top off evaporation on this tank. Kinda makes you wonder what these things are eating. They only open up at lights off and I don’t feed this tank at all.

Very interesting, I’m still trying to get good pictures of them. They are nocturnal whatever they are.

The base looks relatively similar, but the rest of the nem looks off to me.

At this point, I think I can say it’s from the Superfamily Metridioidea, but that’s about it.

Do you think it could be in the aiptasiiade family? Most of the aiptasia species are rarely documented, so it could be any of the dozens of them. I was thinking of that species as the feeding arms of the nem are white in the second set of photos, however color varies between populations.

Octineon is the genus.

Yeah, Octineon is a close match for the foot and tentacles (though the tentacles looked slightly off to me), but the body/stalk is wrong. Plus, all of the species are temperate/coldwater species from locations where they wouldn’t hitchhike in.

Also, found this site that contains all documented occurances of species, also including photos in the more common species. I think this will be helpful for someone like you.

Haha, yeah, GBIF is good - they use the WORMS database which is my preference for marine taxonomy. I utilize quite a few sites like that one (see my post in the link below):

Does anyone know a good website or place that has a really nice selection of fish or just information about fish. I seem to constantly find new fish and never know the names. LiveAquaria has a okay selection but they are still missing some fish. Just looking for info with pictures and names...

I just got done tricking them to open and hit ‘em with the white light and microscope. These suckers are hard to get pictures of.

Any chance you could get a pic like this (full-body side shot of the nem) of one of the largest specimens with a solid black background behind the nem? Also, can you take some top-down straight on shots of the mouth?

If possible, shining a flashlight on it may help with getting well-lit, white light pics.

Edit: A somewhat closer-in shot similar to that one I mentioned (far enough out to show the whole nem, but as close as you can get otherwise).
