i've had a little nuisance algae in my system and use gfo as my primary source of nutrient export but am interested in trying out some chaeto. my concern is that i only have the 5"x13"x16" inlet chamber of my sump to grow it in. am i just wasting my time and money or will it made a modest difference?

Any chaeto will help and it's a good place to grow copepods without predators. You can set it up for little cost with a 6500k shop light from a hardware store and some cheap/free chaeto from someone local. No harm in trying.

I think it will. They sell Nano fuge lights. I've had a lot of success in the past with them. I wouldn't leave the light on 24/7 I would probably run it 14-16 hours opposite from your reef lights.

GFO wouldn't be my top choice as a main export. IMO it throws off the nutrient ratio. It can also pull out trace elements. How large is the tank?

its 120g with a 30g sump.
i guess technically my skimmer is my #1 means but aside from that is the gfo. i agree that it isn't ideal and would like to give this a try to see if it responds positively.

I had one of those 36g tanks with the built in filtration in the back. I ran a nano magnet light and had to prune it regularly. The light is still adding to the fuge on my 700g
